1 Day Congo Tour to Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Congo Chimpanzee Trekking Safari Tour. The Lwiro Sanctuary also known as the Center for Rehabilitation of Primates came into existence in the year 2002 by two Conservation bodies of Congo namely; Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and the Center de Recherché en Sciences Naturelles (CRSN).
This was at the peak of the second Congo War (1998 – 2004) where the poaching was very rampant and the officials opted to set up a safe haven for the Orphaned Chimpanzees.
COOPERA joined the two bodies in the year 2006 to assist with the financing of the Project’s maintenance and apparently, there are three bodies along with a range of International donors which combine to offer remarkable care for resident animals.
The center is apparently the main primate rehabilitation center sustaining 66 Chimpanzees along with 88 Monkeys from eleven (11) various species that have been victims of poaching and illegal pet trade.
Therefore, arranging a day trip to this center is by no means ordinary.
You set off early in the morning from Bukavu the main town of South Kivu Province and connect to the Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary to spend the entire day exploring the life of the Chimpanzees.
